हिंदी टाइपिंग टेस्ट और ट्यूटर — Free Hindi Typing Test in Mangal Font
This page is two tools in one: a free Hindi typing test that reports your speed and accuracy in the format government exams use, and a 60-lesson Hindi typing tutor that teaches the keyboard from the home row up. Both run on the Mangal Unicode font with the InScript keyboard layout — the exact combination used in the CPCT exam and most Unicode-based typing tests in India.
The part that trips up most beginners is solved here: you do not need to install a Hindi keyboard, a Mangal font, or any software. Leave Windows on English. This page reads the physical key you press and produces the correct Devanagari character itself, so k types क, l types त and j types र. Everything runs inside your browser, works on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS, and nothing you type is ever uploaded.
हिंदी टाइपिंग टेस्ट कैसे दें — How to take the test
- Pick a test length. Choose 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes at the top of the tool. The 5-minute test matches the CPCT Hindi typing format.
- Leave your system keyboard on English. Nothing to install, nothing to switch — the InScript mapping is handled on this page.
- Start typing the passage. The clock starts on your first keystroke, not before, so you can settle your fingers on the home row first.
- Read your result. You get Gross WPM, Net WPM, accuracy and total keystrokes, plus how your net speed compares with the 30 WPM Hindi benchmark.
A wrong key does not move the cursor forward — it flags the mistake and waits. That is deliberate: exam software scores you on the finished passage, so learning to correct yourself in the moment is worth more than racing past errors.
किन परीक्षाओं में यह काम आता है — Exams that use this format
Hindi typing tests appear in a growing list of government recruitments. What changes between them is the font and the keyboard layout, so check both before you start preparing:
| परीक्षा · Exam | Font | Layout | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPCT (Madhya Pradesh) | Mangal (Unicode) | InScript, with a Remington GAIL option | 5-minute Hindi passage; result judged on net speed after accuracy |
| SSC CHSL / CGL (DEST) | Mangal (Unicode) | InScript | Short data-entry / typing passage |
| PSSSB (Punjab) Hindi post | Unicode (Mangal) | InScript | Typing test is qualifying in nature |
| RSMSSB / RPSC (Rajasthan) | Kruti Dev (legacy) | Remington | Uses the legacy font, not Mangal |
Exam patterns and qualifying speeds change from year to year. Treat this as a starting point and confirm the details in the official notification for your exam.
Mangal फ़ॉन्ट क्या है — What Mangal font actually means
Mangal is the Devanagari Unicode font that ships with Windows. When an exam says "Hindi typing in Mangal font", it really means type real Unicode Hindi — text that stays Hindi everywhere: in Word, in email, in a search box, on a website. The characters you produce on this page are those same Unicode characters, which is why practice here transfers directly to a Mangal-based exam.
This is different from legacy fonts such as Kruti Dev, where each key maps to a picture of a Hindi glyph while the underlying text is still English letters. Copy Kruti Dev text somewhere without the font and it turns to gibberish; Unicode Hindi never does.
InScript, Remington GAIL और Kruti Dev — which layout should you learn?
InScript (Mangal / Unicode)
- आधार · Basis:
- Government of India standard (BIS)
- Key logic:
- Vowels on the left hand, consonants on the right, in Devanagari alphabetical order
- Used in:
- CPCT, SSC, most Unicode-based exams and all modern computer work
- Learning curve:
- Easiest to learn — the order follows the varnamala you already know
Remington GAIL
- आधार · Basis:
- Based on the old Remington typewriter
- Key logic:
- Key positions inherited from mechanical typewriters, not alphabetical
- Used in:
- Offered as an alternative in CPCT and some state exams
- Learning curve:
- Harder for beginners; useful if you already typed on a typewriter
Kruti Dev (Remington)
- आधार · Basis:
- Legacy 8-bit font, not Unicode
- Key logic:
- Each key maps to a glyph, not a real Devanagari character
- Used in:
- Rajasthan (RSMSSB/RPSC) and some older state exams
- Learning curve:
- Text is not searchable or shareable outside the font
For almost everyone starting today the answer is InScript. It is the official BIS standard, it is what CPCT and SSC use, it produces Unicode text you can use anywhere, and its logic is easy to remember: the left hand holds every vowel and matra, the right hand holds the consonants, arranged in the same order as the Devanagari varnamala. Learn InScript once and the same keyboard works for Marathi, Sanskrit, Nepali and Konkani, because they share this layout.

Three keys do most of the work and are worth memorising first: K = क, L = त and J = र. The D key is halant (्), which joins two consonants into a conjunct, and Shift+. gives the danda (।) that ends a Hindi sentence.
उँगलियाँ कहाँ रखें — Home row and finger placement
Touch typing means every key belongs to one finger, always. Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ; — in Hindi that is ो े ् ि under the left hand and र क त च under the right. Both index fingers can feel the small ridge on F and J, so you can always find your way back without looking.
In the tool above, every key is colour-coded by finger and the two hands beside the keyboard show the exact finger to use, lifting it as you go. The colours on the hands and on the keys always match, so you can learn the mapping by sight instead of memorising it.
गति कैसे मापी जाती है — How typing speed is calculated
A "word" in typing is defined as five keystrokes, including spaces — that is how every typing test in the world counts, so that long and short words are treated fairly. From that come two numbers:
Gross WPM = (total keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy % = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100
Net WPM = Gross WPM × Accuracy %
Exams grade you on Net WPM, and that single fact should shape how you practise. Typing at 40 WPM with 75% accuracy leaves you at 30 net — the same as typing calmly at 32 WPM with 95% accuracy, but far more tiring. Speed built on top of accuracy is stable; speed built on guessing collapses under exam pressure.
| स्तर · Level | Net speed | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| अभ्यासी · Beginner | 8 – 15 WPM | Still looking at the keyboard; learning key positions |
| औसत · Average | 20 – 25 WPM | Typing without looking, but pausing to think |
| परीक्षा स्तर · Exam-ready | 30 – 35 WPM | Clears the 30 WPM Hindi bar used by CPCT |
| कुशल · Skilled | 40 – 50 WPM | Comfortable for daily office and data-entry work |
| विशेषज्ञ · Expert | 50+ WPM | Professional Hindi typist speed |
60 पाठों का कोर्स — The full lesson path
The tutor teaches the keyboard the way a typing institute does: one finger-pair at a time, with each new key drilled until it is automatic before the next one arrives. There are 60 lessons in 7 stages, and each drill runs endlessly — it keeps generating fresh combinations of the keys you have learned until you decide to stop.
- 1. होम रो · Home Row — Where your fingers rest — learn one finger-pair at a time. (9 lessons)
- 2. ऊपरी पंक्ति · Top Row — Reach up from the home row for the top-row keys. (11 lessons)
- 3. निचली पंक्ति · Bottom Row — Reach down for the bottom-row keys — the full base keyboard. (10 lessons)
- 4. शिफ्ट अक्षर · Shift Letters — Full vowels, aspirated letters and nasal signs with Shift. (9 lessons)
- 5. संयुक्ताक्षर और चिह्न · Conjuncts & Symbols — Joint letters, nukta, punctuation and numbers. (9 lessons)
- 6. शब्द और वाक्य · Words & Sentences — Common words, phrases and complete sentences. (6 lessons)
- 7. अनुच्छेद · Paragraphs — Six full passages — build real-world speed and stamina. (6 lessons)
गति बढ़ाने के 8 सुझाव — Eight ways to type Hindi faster
- Accuracy first, always. Do not chase speed until you hold 95% accuracy. Because net speed is multiplied by accuracy, a clean 30 beats a messy 40.
- Never look down. Use the on-screen keyboard instead of your hands. It feels slower for three days and faster forever after.
- Practise 20 minutes daily, not two hours weekly. Muscle memory is built by frequency, not duration.
- Master the matras early. ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ appear in almost every Hindi word; fluency with the left hand decides your speed.
- Drill conjuncts separately. क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र and halant combinations are where most learners stall — lesson 40 onward is built for exactly this.
- Type real sentences, not just letters. Words and paragraphs train the rhythm and the space bar, which letter drills never do.
- Take the timed test weekly, not daily. Test to measure, practise to improve — swapping the two is why progress stalls.
- Sit properly. Wrists up, elbows near your sides, screen at eye level. Comfort is what lets you sustain speed for a full five-minute exam.
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न — Frequently asked questions
क्या यह हिंदी टाइपिंग टेस्ट पूरी तरह मुफ़्त है? Is this Hindi typing test free? +
Yes. Every test and all 60 lessons are completely free, with no sign-up, no login and no limit on attempts. Your typing never leaves your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server.
क्या मुझे हिंदी कीबोर्ड या Mangal फ़ॉन्ट इंस्टॉल करना होगा? Do I need to install a Hindi keyboard or Mangal font? +
No. The page reads your normal English (QWERTY) keys and produces Devanagari characters itself using the InScript mapping, so nothing has to be installed or switched on in Windows. Keep your system language on English while you practise. Mangal is simply a Unicode font — the characters you type here are the same Unicode characters an exam produces in Mangal.
क्या यह CPCT हिंदी टाइपिंग टेस्ट के लिए उपयोगी है? Is this useful for the CPCT Hindi typing test? +
Yes, because it matches the CPCT combination: Mangal Unicode output typed on the InScript layout. The 5-minute test on this page mirrors the CPCT typing duration and reports net speed the same way, so the skill transfers directly. Always confirm the current pattern and qualifying speed in the official notification for your exam year.
Net WPM और Gross WPM में क्या अंतर है? What is the difference between Net WPM and Gross WPM? +
Gross WPM counts every keystroke you made, divided by five, per minute. Net WPM removes your mistakes: it is Gross WPM multiplied by your accuracy percentage. Exams judge you on the net figure, which is why accuracy matters more than raw speed — typing at 40 WPM with 70% accuracy gives a net 28 WPM, while 32 WPM at 95% gives about 30 WPM.
Mangal और Kruti Dev में क्या अंतर है? What is the difference between Mangal and Kruti Dev? +
Mangal is a Unicode font: the text you type is real Devanagari that works in every app, website and search box. Kruti Dev is a legacy font where each key maps to a picture of a glyph — the text looks Hindi but is stored as English letters, so it breaks when the font is missing. Most modern exams have moved to Mangal Unicode; Kruti Dev survives mainly in some Rajasthan exams.
क्या यह English to Hindi टाइपिंग टूल है? Is this an English-to-Hindi typing (transliteration) tool? +
No, and the difference matters for exams. Transliteration tools let you type 'namaste' and convert it to नमस्ते. This page teaches direct Hindi typing on the InScript keyboard, which is what government typing tests require — transliteration is not allowed in an exam hall.
हिंदी टाइपिंग सीखने में कितना समय लगता है? How long does it take to learn Hindi typing? +
With 20–30 focused minutes a day, most learners finish the home-row and top-row lessons in about two weeks, reach a comfortable 20 WPM in four to six weeks, and cross the 30 WPM exam bar in roughly two to three months. Daily short practice beats occasional long sessions.
InScript कीबोर्ड में हलंत और संयुक्ताक्षर कैसे टाइप करें? How do I type halant and conjunct letters? +
Halant (्) sits on the D key. Type the first consonant, press D, then the second consonant — so क + D + ष gives क्ष. InScript also offers ready-made shortcuts on the number row with Shift: Shift+5 gives ज्ञ, Shift+6 gives त्र, Shift+7 gives क्ष and Shift+8 gives श्र.
क्या मैं मोबाइल पर अभ्यास कर सकता हूँ? Can I practise on a mobile phone? +
The lessons and tests need a physical keyboard, so a laptop or desktop is required for real practice. You can read this guide and the keyboard chart on a phone, but touch-typing skill only develops on a real keyboard — which is also what you will face in the exam.
क्या मेरी प्रगति सेव होती है? Is my progress saved? +
Yes, on your own device. Your best speed, accuracy and stars for each lesson and test are stored in your browser, so you can pick up where you left off. Nothing is sent to a server and no account is needed — clearing your browser data will reset it.
10 मिनट बाद गति फिर से क्यों गिनी जाती है? Why do the stats reset every 10 minutes? +
In a long practice session, slow warm-up minutes drag your average down forever. Resetting the measurement every ten minutes gives you a fresh, honest reading of how you are typing now, so improvement within a session is visible.
टाइपिंग करते समय कीबोर्ड देखना ठीक है? Is it okay to look at the keyboard while typing? +
Try not to. Use the on-screen keyboard and hand guide on this page instead of looking down — that is exactly why they are there. Looking at your hands builds a habit that caps your speed at around 25 WPM, while touch typing has no such ceiling.
आगे क्या — Where to go next
Start with the 5-minute test to see where you stand today, then work through the lessons from L1 in order — even if you already type a little, the home-row lessons fix the finger habits that cap your speed later. Come back to the test once a week and watch the net WPM climb.
Also useful: Word counter for checking passage length, Text compare to see exactly where your typed copy differs from the original, and Text share to send a practice passage to a friend.
